About this place
Step through the noren curtains blending into the neighbourhood streetscape, and the rhythmic clatter of woks meets you alongside an unmistakably comforting, nostalgic aroma. Rooted in the daily rhythms of Higashi-Jujo and Kamiya, AzumaKen is the kind of local Chinese diner—machi chuka—that naturally draws people in for an unpretentious midday meal. Facing a sprawling menu of noodles, teishoku sets, and à la carte dishes, the real dilemma is choosing between a hearty set meal and the brisk satisfaction of soup and fried rice.
One of the shop's genuine standouts is the karaage teishoku. The pieces of fried chicken piled onto the plate are generously cut, juicy through and through, with a deep marinade where punchy garlic sparks the appetite. A side of crisp, finely shredded cabbage offers a refreshing counterpoint, keeping the pace brisk between bites of chicken and bowls of steamed white rice right to the end.
Combination sets pairing noodles with rice are equally plentiful. The half-fried-rice set delivers an enduring classic: the clear, clean broth of a soy-sauce ramen partnered with fluffy, loose-grained chahan enriched by the gentle sweetness of egg and savoury roast pork. For days when you crave extra vegetables, the tanmen—perfumed with rising sesame oil and loaded with crisp stir-fried greens—or the sweet-savoury pork yakiniku ramen are both dependable picks.
Lunch service runs from 11:30 to 15:00, with doors closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Seating includes both counter and table options, creating a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere where solo diners can eat comfortably without fuss. Note that payment is cash only, so it is wise to check your wallet before heading over.
